Mother & Child

In the news today is a woman of 63 who is soon to be a mum, she is currently 7 months pregnant. There are mixed reactions from congratulations to accusations of selfishness.

I am kind of in the middle. On the one hand, people have a right to have a child. Procreation is afterall in the interests of our species. Children can bring immense happiness to parents, relatives, friends and even strangers. I have lost count of times that a child has put a smile on my face simply by smiling at me first. Kids are cool - end of.

On the other hand, she is 63 and i presume she will be having a cesarean. Not to mention the required energy levels she will need to cope with a constantly crying child. Babies need attention, and lots of it. In about 4/5 years the baby will be wanting to walk/run everywhere as they tend to do and may need chasing after. She will be 67/68 at this point. By the time the baby is 10, she'll be 73. By the time the baby grows to his/her mid-teens, she will be 77/78. To put it bluntly, she may even be dead by that time. It goes without saying that i dont wish her dead.

It is her right to have a baby. I cannot say for certain that i am convinced she is doing the responsible thing.

Good luck to her and i sincerely wish her all the best.
