Of pills and shagging

In the last week or so, there has been a story in the media about the male equivalent of the pill being available sometime in the future - no time scale has as yet been given i think. Apparently it works by basically reducing your sperm count to infertile levels. Should you wish to get back to your normal fertility levels, cease taking the pill and after 3-4 months it should be back and you can start making babies again should you wish.

A link to the story and a debate on the Times website is here

There is a comment on the Times debate page that has me vexed.

"Trusting a man to remember to take his birth control Pill? Scary thought." Kim, California

That is a very silly statement IMO. Women like her IMO make men not trust women because by her comments, she doesn't trust men. Does she really think that every guy out there who is having sex wants to have a baby, that when he meets a girl in the bar he is thinking "she looks like she has a nice womb".

This pill if it does come into the market will enable men to take control of their own fertility. It will also benefit those who prefer to have sex with no condoms because it reduces the pleasure of sex (there is still the problem of STD's).

That is the main bad point about this pill if it does come about. It cant do jack against STD's. There is a possibility of loads of men and women who will be shagging for queen and country delighted by the lack of worry about babies. This consequently may (or may not) lead to an increase in the occurence of STD's.

I hope it comes out soon enough and hopefully with no serious side effects. So long as it is safe, i'd take it.
